How to share screenshots without leaking customer data
Every how-to guide, ticket and SOP starts with a screenshot of a real screen. Real screens show real customers.
What leaks
Not just the record you are working on. Look at the edges: the search box with last week's query, the recent-items list, the notification in the corner, the browser tab title, the account switcher. Emails and phone numbers hide in all of them.
Why blurring by hand fails
A 20-step guide has 20 screenshots. Miss one field on one step and the guide is out. Blur boxes also drift when the layout changes, and a heavy blur on short text can sometimes be guessed back.
A checklist before you share
1. Record on a test account or demo data when you can.
2. Close notifications, chat panels and unrelated tabs first.
3. Check every step, not just the first and last.
4. Look at the edges: search boxes, sidebars, headers, tab titles.
5. Prefer replacing data with sample values over blur, so the guide still reads naturally.
6. Keep screenshots out of tools that index them until they are clean.
Do it before the screenshot
The safest image is one that never captured the data. Pexli detects emails, phone numbers, ID and card numbers, and IP and MAC addresses on the page and hides them before each screenshot is taken. You choose blur or sample data, blur anything else by hand, and review every step before you share. See how it works.
